MEGAFIRES AND SOIL EROSION

MEGAFIRES AND SOIL EROSION

Several studies document the dire consequences that megafires have on the soil of Mediterranean forests. The virulence of this fire affects the internal layers of the forest and creates many difficulties for the recovery of the forest mass. But the difficulties are aggravated even more when, after the fire, a scenario of torrential rains arrives.

The Forest Science and Technology Center of Catalonia (CTFC) and the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF) recommend quick actions after the fire to ensure adequate management before the rains arrive. The two institutions have been studying the increase in erosion in Mediterranean forests for years and the figures they have collected show losses of forest mass that cannot be underestimated.
