From the reactive paradigm to the preventive paradigm: FIRE WINE at the Final Event of the European project FIRE-RES

FIRE WINE is participating on 4 and 5 November in Brussels at the Final Event of the European project FIRE RES, promoted by the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC). Two days of experience-sharing aimed at advancing towards the creation of resilient mosaic landscapes prepared to face the risk of large wildfires. Taking part are Antoni Trasobares, FIRE-RES coordinator and Director General of the CTFC, and Elena Górriz and Soazig Darnay, coordinators of the FIRE WINE initiative. The conclusions from the debates and talks so far point to a unanimous agreement: we need to shift from a reactive paradigm in managing large fires to a proactive, landscape-based approach to prevent them.

The FIRE WINE initiative and its EU-certified labels Fire Wine Resilient Landscape© and Fire Product Resilient Landscape©, have received praise from experts such as Val Charlton, Director of the South African organisation Landworks NPC, which specialises in integrated fire and landscape management. Charlton has been involved in major projects on wildfire risk prevention and management, as well as climate change resilience strategies, particularly in South Africa.

Charlton, key speaker at the panel discussion “Integrated Fire Management: A Scientific and Operational Shift – How can we complement reactive fire suppression with proactive, landscape-scale fire management across the European Union?”, has called for the large-scale expansion of the FIRE WINE initiative.
